Charlie Tremendous Jones

During a recent television interview that I was conducting with Mark Victor Hansen, Mark mentioned Charlie “Tremendous” Jones. That reminiscence prompted me to see what YouTube might have and I found several video clips of this wonderful speaker and author of personal development material.

Here’s one you might enjoy.

Charlie was one of life’s great lights; full of enthusiasm, quick to encourage others, a man of great courage and wisdom. He died a year ago from cancer yet remains to this day an example of letting life’s challenges mold rather than break us.

Emotional Word Pictures

Have you ever tried to tell someone a funny thing that happened to you?

Try as you might you simply are not able to re-capture the hilarity of the moment? In fact, your version of what happened is not even remotely funny. Even though you are convulsing with laughter as you tell your story of what happened, your friend stands quiet. What took place then is not funny now.

When you can tolerate your failure to recreate that funny moment any longer you finally say, “I guess you had to be there.”

But being there was why the event was funny in the first place and try as you might you simply cannot detail enough emotion or timing of the actual event to make your audience even recognize the hilarity of the moment, let alone laugh with you.

Recounting a funny story to someone is a daunting task. Even though your recollection of the event is absolutely hilarious, recreating the event for an audience is a challenge.

A skillful comedian can look at life’s simple moments and bring us to tears in their retelling.

Great communicators connect powerfully with their audience as well using a learnable and powerful skill that I call “emotional word pictures.” They are not limited to humor.

Emotional word pictures communicate what you mean AND what you feel AND what you want your audience to feel about a given subject.

Great emotional word pictures grab attention and instantly convey what you want to say directly to your audience in a succinct, precise, and effective way.

Here are a few samples of classic emotional word pictures from popular songs:

You’d better watch out, you’d better not cry, you’d better not pout I’m telling you why.
If you see me walking down the street and I start to cry, walk on by.
All I do the whole night through is dream of you.

Creating effective word pictures require a number of key elements including the timing of the phrase during conversation or presentation and the orientation between you and the audience with which you are communicating. You cannot be effective if you do not know who you are talking with and what information is capable of reaching them on an emotional level.

In the first song, the audience is a wide eyed anxious child hoping for good favor from Santa. It is wonderful example of timing, audience and anxious waiting for a promised effect.

In the second lyric, a lover is powerfully telling her former suitor the pain that his presence will create.

The third speaks volumes by connecting the dreams of slumber and a person’s place in a night full of dreams.

I will write more about this fascinating topic. Listen for opportunity to connect a moment in a conversation, with the emotion of that moment and a clarification of the relationship. It sounds challenging, which it is, but it is learnable and will powerfully assist your communication skills as you master the simple but powerful skill of creating and using emotional word pictures.

Three Communication Skills that can Change Everything.

No single skill is more important to our success and happiness than the ability to communicate. Communication is your key to personal contentment and continuing professional growth. The interpersonal skills required to convey information, clearly reveal intentions and illuminate feelings are a mystery to most of us. Let me give you three communication skills that can change everything.

Gaining an understanding of these skills and then using them will empower you to in a way that makes you capable of creating masterful and persuasive communications.

You too can become a great communicator. As with all skills that contribute to the success of super achievers in business and personal relationships; these skills of communication can be learned and your current ability to speak, write and present can become better.

Effective communicators know it is their responsibility to grab a listener’s undivided attention, hold that attention until you impart a clear understanding of what’s being said, and then implant what is felt into the emotions of the listener.

Great communicators use these simple three techniques.

Three Techniques to Become a Masterful and Persuasive Communicator.

1. Hook

2. Salting

3. Emotional Word Pictures

Hook

Simply stated, the first thing you need to do when effectively communicating is to

grab your listener’s undivided attention. We accomplish this with a “hook,” a strong statement, a personal reference, or specific question that grabs a person’s attention at the beginning of the communication. A “hook” instantly brings the listener “into” the conversation.

Here is an example.

“Have you ever looked at your hair in the mirror and wanted to cry?”

Cher was my celebrity spokesperson for a great line of hair care products and the preceding statement was her “hook.” I wrote that line for her to use to begin her conversation with hair care buyers.

Hooking a Person’s Undivided Attention

An effective “hook” is built around three qualities; a strong and captivating statement, a personal reference, or a specific question.

The best hooks contain more than one of these qualities. The line that I wrote for Cher used two; a strong and captivating statement and a specific question. Remember the components of great “hooks.”

During your conversations today look for opportunities to grab your listener’s attention using one or all of these qualities. Writing a good hook is a learned skill that you develop. Like any other skill, you become better by doing. Constantly think, write and try using hooks.

Salting

Once you gain a person’s undivided attention you need to keep that attention at a high level. Personal interest in any particular matter will always ebb and flow. Interest levels begin to decline as soon as ten or twenty seconds after the start of your conversation or presentation.

You keep a person’s attention level high throughout a conversation or presentation with a technique called “salting.”

You’ve heard the adage, “You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink.” Well, that’s simply not true. I can make him drink every single time I take him to the water. All I need to do is salt his oats before I get him to the water. The salt makes him thirsty for the water before he ever gets there. We achieve similar results in our personal and professional communications.

In communication “salt” is a statement, a group of statements or a question that creates curiosity about what we are going to say before we say it. For example, in his video seminar on relationships, Gary Smalley tells women that there are two things they do that make a man want to get away from them faster than a speeding bullet. Gary points out that these two things are so devastating to a man’s ego, that it not only makes a man want to get away from his wife, it can even make him seek another woman to heal his wounds.

What a great “salt” for the coming conversation.

Needless to say, every woman wants to know what those “two things” are long before Gary reveals them. His salting not only makes women curious about what he is going to say but effectively draws his audience in with undivided attention.

Emotional Word Pictures

The final key to powerful and effective communication is your ability to create Emotional Word Pictures.

Mark Twain, Abraham Lincoln, Ben Franklin and even the Biblical writers and prophets used this technique to move their listeners and readers to the heights of human understanding and emotion. It is literally the master key that opens the door to a person’s mind and heart at the same time.

Emotional Word Pictures have not only been the most powerful communication technique I have ever used, it is the single most powerful technique used by the world’s greatest communicators throughout the ages like Ronald Reagan, Teddy Roosevelt, Winston Churchill and many others.

An emotional word picture is a word, statement or short story that creates an instant picture in the listener or reader’s mind. It effectively clarifies what you are trying to say and communicates a feeling that you want your audience to feel. It can be as simple as a word or statement; or as complex as a short story or analogy. Creating emotional word pictures is a learned technique. With practice they will become your greatest ally in persuading others to listen to what you have to say and do what you believe to be in their best interest.

The Greatest Part of any Work is the Beginning

As I travel and meet you I am overwhelmed by your resilience and attitude.

In spite of a crazy economy and challenges that none of us could have imagined just a few months ago, you remain optimistic, enthusiastic and committed to making your lives better.

I believe it is timely that we begin collecting our shared experience and mentoring one another through our common interests. If for no other reason than to know that we are not alone in facing these current challenges and that answers to life’s challenges exist. I have found many, continue to search for others and promise to share my personal insight and opportunity with you. We are, as the humorist Steve Smith, creator of television’s Red Green Show points out “all in this together.”

I Am Not An Author

I do not think of myself as a writer. I write to share what works in my own life. My first book, “Millionaire’s Notebook” was not created in order to find a publisher but as a response to my daughter who didn’t understand the growth of my career. When I was losing nine jobs in four years, she was too young to remember those days of struggle. By the time she reached an awareness of what was happening in our life, I was succeeding, but not because anyone handed it to me, because I was humbled, sought the Lord and He directed me to answers and opportunity. One day she asked me. “What do I do?” I created a manuscript of my experience in answer to her question. That book was published through an accident, or act of God. And every book that I have written since has been an effort to make sense of what I am being taught and how I am learning to navigate this life. Along the way I meet people like you, who teach, share and lead my discovery of meaning.

I hope, that as I share my experience and what I have learned to be true and worthwhile with you, that you might avoid some of the mistakes that have derailed my career and happiness. I am certain that many of you will do an even better job of implementing proven success methods into your lives than I have into mine.

By studying the success process and looking at the lives of successful people from Jesus to Solomon to Gary Smalley, Chuck Norris, Thomas Edison and hundreds of others, I have learned that the principles, strategies, techniques and concepts that guided their success can guide your own.
